CB-web-logo-whitebackCommute Boston is the Boston Cyclists Union’s bike commuting encouragement program. Businesses or other organizations can join up and help their employees, students or members get pedaling. Commute Boston offers a number of services and educational opportunities geared to help your company become healthier, greener and more sustainable. People who bike to work typically live longer, are more physically fit, and are less likely to miss a day of work.

A basic Commute Boston membership costs your organization only $300 and includes:

  • One Bike to Work, Winterization, Safety or Basic Bike Maintenance class (see descriptions below) and a 10% discount on future classes.
  • One hour meeting with the Executive Director to strategize on making your business more bike friendly
  • One individual membership to the Union
  • Bike parking assessment and quote for your business from Dero Bike Racks
  • Social media promotion of your business’s advancements on becoming more bike friendly
  • Recognition in the Bike Union’s Annual Report and website.

CLASSES

Commute Boston Bike to Work Class

Bringing our Bike to Work class to your workplace is a great way to get more of your employees to ride. The class provides an overview of bike safety, what bike to choose, what other gear and good maintenance habits help make a pleasant biking experience, and establishes a relationship between your employees and the Union. The Bike Union promotes community rides, networking events, and other activities that help new riders connect with others who can help them get on two wheels.
Pricing: Commute Boston membership comes with one free class of any kind. Additional classes can be added for $200. Scheduling is based on instructor availability. Class lasts one and a half hours, 30 minutes of lecture and one hour of hands on experience.

Winterization Class

Winterization class helps riders prepare for Boston’s colder months. Topics discussed include winterizing a bike, warm clothing recommendations, and managing a bike in winter conditions.

Bike Safety Class

Specifically focused on safety, the Union’s bike safety class is targeted to communities that are reacting to a local safety concern, such as a recent crash involving a bike. For a more balanced class designed to encourage more cycling in your community, the Bike to Work class includes a bike safety overview.

Jamaica Plain Winter B2M Luis JenBasic Bike Maintenance class

An important element of safety and essential to building a sustainable commitment to bike commuting, the Union’s bike maintenance class can be customized toward what your employees most want to learn. A typical class might include how to fix a flat, how to adjust for fit, how to care for your chain and derailleurs, or how to change out your brake shoes.

OTHER SERVICES

Bike Valet Service

Give your event attendees or customers a touch of class by offering them valet bicycle parking. Bike valet is an ideal way to promote bicycling among your guests as a way to be green, to be healthy, or simply to cut down on demand for car parking.

The Bike Union’s unique bike valet service is mobilized completely by bicycle and is fully insured. Infrastructure for the valet lot is customized to the event space and signage is provided.

Pricing: $45/hour, including travel time (a speedy bike from Roxbury). Please add one hour for set up and take down. Three-hour minimum. No flat fee.

Talkin3Bike Breakfast

Bike-powered Bike Breakfasts can be operated exclusively for your employees or community or sponsored at a location nearby chosen by the Bike Union for its visibility to other cyclists. Sponsoring a location includes recognition for your company at the stand and in advertising and social media.

Pricing: Cost of food (if not supplied) and $45/hour, including travel time (a speedy bike from Roxbury). Please add one hour for set up and take down. Three-hour minimum. No flat fee.

Repair Clinic

The Boston Cyclists Union excels at mobile repair clinics. The clinic can be geared to repair as many bikes as possible in the shortest period of time, or they can be focused on hands on education as in our Bike to Market program. Bring the program to your office today and your employees will not only leave the building safer and more knowledgable, they’ll be asking to learn more.

Pricing: $250 base price plus $21 per mechanic, per hour. This includes the use of our full 10×10 canopy tent, a wide variety of available parts and accessories on hand (sold at regular price, labor is free), and several extra bike stands for hands on learning. How many mechanics you need is dependent on how many bikes might be repaired. For three mechanics, here is a breakdown of our capacity (based on a rule of 15-minutes per repair maximum).

  • $376 for 2 hours, 12 to 24 bikes ($31 to $16 per bike)
  • $439 for 3 hours 18 to 36 bikes ($24 to $12 per bike)
